Sky Reflections : 14-24mm Wide Angle Shot

This shot was taken with the Nikon 14-24mm lens which really helped add some drama to the clouds and reflections. The processing was pretty basic, I found this lens seems to make the color more saturated than normal. The main adjustment I made in Lightroom was to the highlights which have been increased to give the image more contrast, this helps accentuate the texture in the sky and clouds. I also added a small amount of extra saturation in the hill areas to bring out the greens. CLICK HERE to learn more about Adobe Lightroom. Beautiful sunset across the harbor in Auckland. Shot with my Nikon D3 and processed using Lightroom

Today was a great day to be out in Auckland (New Zealand), it was nice to finally have a few clear days, it almost felt like a slice of summer. I really like the simplicity of this shot, I added a bit more color in Lightroom and then pushed the tones toward green instead of blue. I used the clarity function to enhance the clouds, I also added a few gradient filters top and bottom to darken the sky and water. I finished the image off by adding some selective sharpening to bring out the texture on the waves. CLICK HERE to learn more about Adobe Lightroom. Lightroom Tips and Tricks - How to edit the perfect cloud texture

Being cloudscape photographer sounds easy, but the reality is far more differcult. It's too easy to take flat uneventful shots and not look deeper into abstract and textural subtleties. When finding clouds to photograph it's crucial to look for shape, depth and texture. Clouds can be treated as abstract art, or as a moving changing organism. Movement can be added by slowing the shutter speed setting down to create a blurred texture, or zoom lenses used to find interesting detail.
